Frequently Asked Questions

What would you like to know?

General about pipette calibration

1. Why is pipette calibration necessary?
Regular calibration ensures that the pipette delivers accurate volumes, which is crucial for reliable analytical results.

2. How often should pipettes be calibrated?
It depends on usage, but calibration is typically recommended every 6–12 months, or more frequently with intensive use.

3. What happens if pipettes are not calibrated regularly?
Incorrect volumes can lead to inaccurate analytical results, affecting quality and in some cases causing costly rework.

4. What types of pipettes can you calibrate?
We calibrate all models and brands of single-channel and multichannel pipettes.

5. Can you also repair pipettes?
Yes, we offer service, repair, and preventive maintenance.

About our services (Pipettdoktorn)

6. What does Pipettdoktorn do?
We provide professional calibration, maintenance, service, and repair of pipettes for laboratories in research, healthcare, and industry.

7. Where is the calibration performed?
Calibration is carried out in our laboratory in Täby. For multichannel pipettes ≤10 µl and accredited calibration of multichannel pipettes, we collaborate with Sartorius in Finland.

8. How long does maintenance and calibration take?
Typically two weeks from receipt to delivery.

9. Do you receive documentation after calibration?
Yes, all calibrations are documented, and a service and calibration report is sent electronically (along with a certificate for accredited calibration according to ISO 17025).

Standard calibration

10. What is standard (non-accredited) calibration?
This is a traceable calibration performed according to established and standardized methods, but without formal accreditation according to ISO/IEC 17025.

11. When is non-accredited calibration sufficient?
For organizations that require reliable and traceable measurement results but are not subject to accredited calibration requirements.

12. Is non-accredited calibration reliable?
Yes. It is performed using established methods and provides reliable results, but lacks accredited status and third-party assessment according to ISO/IEC 17025.

Accredited calibration

13. What does accredited calibration mean?
It means that the calibration is performed according to established standards (e.g. ISO/IEC 17025) by a laboratory accredited by a national accreditation body, such as Swedac.

14. When is accredited calibration required?
When required by authorities, customer requirements, or quality standards where accreditation is explicitly mandated, for example in regulated environments or certified management systems.

15. What is the advantage of accreditation?
Accreditation provides international recognition of the laboratory’s competence and increases confidence in measurement results through independent assessment of quality systems, traceability, and technical competence.

16. Is accredited calibration more accurate?
No, not necessarily. The measurement methods may be the same. The difference is that accreditation ensures the work is performed under controlled and audited quality systems with requirements for traceability, measurement uncertainty, and documented competence.

Practical information & ordering

17. How do you send in pipettes for calibration?
You can send them to us according to our instructions or book a pickup. Read more here.

18. Do the pipettes need to be cleaned before service?
Yes, they must be decontaminated and cleaned with 70% ethanol before being sent or collected.

19. How much does calibration cost?
The price varies depending on the type of pipette and scope – contact us for a quote.

20. Can you help with calibration plans?
Yes, we are happy to help develop routines for regular calibration.
